New patient information

Starting care at Paris Asthma & Allergy Centers is straightforward. This page covers everything you need to know before your first visit, including what to bring, what to expect, and how to make the most of your appointment.

Getting started

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit is a focused evaluation designed to understand your symptoms, medical history, and goals. Appointments typically last between 60 and 90 minutes. Your provider will review your history in detail, discuss your symptoms and triggers, and may perform allergy testing or other evaluations depending on your concerns.

Come prepared to discuss your current medications, past allergy or asthma treatments, known triggers, and family history of allergies or asthma. The more context you provide upfront, the more your first visit can focus on answers and next steps.

Before your visit

What to bring to your first appointment

Having the right information ready helps your provider build a complete picture of your health and spend more of your appointment time on care. Please bring the following to your first visit:

  • Photo ID and insurance card.
  • A list of all current medications including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
  • Any prior allergy test results, pulmonary function tests, or relevant lab work.
  • Names and contact information for any other providers currently involved in your care.
  • Completed new patient forms — download and fill these out in advance to save time at the office.
  • A written list of questions or concerns you want to discuss with your provider.
Important pre-visit note

Medications to stop before allergy testing

If your first visit includes allergy skin testing, some medications must be stopped in advance as they can interfere with results. Please review the list below and contact our office if you're unsure whether a medication needs to be stopped.

Stop 5 to 7 days before allergy skin testing:

  • Antihistamines such as Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, and Xyzal.
  • Over-the-counter sleep aids containing diphenhydramine such as Unisom and ZzzQuil.
  • Heartburn medications with antihistamine properties such as Pepcid and Tagamet.
  • Some tricyclic antidepressants — ask your provider if this applies to your medication.

Stop 24 to 48 hours before allergy skin testing:

  • Nasal antihistamine sprays such as Astelin and Patanase.
  • Antihistamine eye drops such as Pataday and Zaditor.

Continue taking unless your provider advises otherwise:

  • Asthma inhalers and nebulizer medications.
  • Nasal steroid sprays such as Flonase, Nasacort, and Rhinocort.
  • Blood pressure medications.
  • Antidepressants not listed above — confirm with your provider if unsure.
  • Allergy eye drops that are not antihistamine-based.
Pediatric care

Bringing a child to their first visit

Paris Asthma & Allergy Centers provides allergy and asthma care for patients of all ages including infants, toddlers, school-age children, and teenagers. If you are scheduling a first visit for a child, a parent or legal guardian must be present throughout the appointment.

Please bring your child's immunization records and any prior medical records related to their allergies, asthma, eczema, or skin conditions if available. The more background you can bring, the easier it is for the provider to connect symptoms and begin building a clear picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Do I need a referral to see an allergist at Paris Asthma and Allergy Centers?

Most patients do not need a referral to schedule a visit. However, some insurance plans require a referral from a primary care provider before seeing a specialist. We recommend checking with your insurance plan before scheduling to confirm whether one is needed.

First appointments typically last between 60 and 90 minutes. This allows enough time for a thorough review of your medical history, a discussion of your symptoms and triggers, and allergy testing if appropriate at that visit. Follow-up visits are generally shorter.

Allergy testing may be performed at the first visit depending on your symptoms and what your provider determines is appropriate. If testing is planned, you will receive specific instructions in advance about which medications to stop and for how long.

We see patients of all ages from young children to older adults. Allergy and asthma care is tailored to age, symptoms, and individual needs at every stage of life.

Please call our office directly to discuss scheduling options for multiple family members. We will do our best to accommodate your needs at the same appointment where possible.

Please contact our office as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule. We ask for at least 24 hours notice when possible so we can offer that appointment time to another patient.

If you are experiencing a severe allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, significant swelling, throat tightness, or signs of anaphylaxis, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. Do not wait for your scheduled appointment. For non-urgent questions between visits, please contact our office directly and our team will assist you.
